'TIS THE SEASON
It's Christmas time, and for Raine Stockton and her Search and Rescue dog, Cisco, Hansonville, North Carolina is just like a Norman Rockwell painting-- except for the rash of thefts of baby Jesus figurines from nativity scenes, an abandoned box of golden retriever puppies that someone leaves beside her mailbox, and a mysterious gift from one of Cisco's a grateful admirers. Raine already has her hands full with her own misbehaving pooches, unexpected house guests, and a complicated new relationship. But when a newborn is abandoned in the manger of the town's living nativity and Raine walks in on what appears to be the scene of a murder, she has more to worry about than keeping the Christmas spirit alive.

Silent Night Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries Book 5 edition by Donna Ball Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
This is the fifth book in the series; and, like the others, it's a light hearted fun mystery with interesting characters both human and canine. I would love to have given this five stars, but I have one big complaint. There are way too many errors .. some grammatical; some missing words in sentences. These things happen in a draft, which is why the author needs an editor to review the book before publication. Each time I came across one of these errors, it took me out of the story. In spite of these flaws I recommend this series to anyone who loves mysteries and dogs. Hopefully, in future books, the author will get a good editor.
I just discovered this series a few days ago and I'm already done with the 5th one. This it a terrific series. You couldn't ask for more. Dogs, agility training and mystery. I love all these things. Ms Ball you have a devoted reader as long as you keep writing these fantastic books. And I''ll even try your others.
The writing is great, the characters are believable and easy to identiffy with and like. The plot is hard enough to keep your interest but not so hard as to stump you completely. The characters are likeable and well defined. The dog training and behavior shows a real and deep knowledge of dogs. I know Aussies and have no trouble believing the things Magic and Mischief get up to. I have competed heavily in both obedience and agility with my Chihuahuas and I haven't caught a mistake yet. You know your subject thoroughly.
I recommend these books and series to any reader of any age. So here's to Cisco, Magic, Mischief, Majesty and all their friends, canine and human. Long may they live.
This is book 5 in a series of fictional mysteries. Raine Stockton is getting ready for Christmas and the big parade in town. She has several dogs off and on but her main dog, Cisco who is a Golden Retriever is also a therapy dog. Dolls for the Nativity scene begin disappearing and during the actual parade a real baby who is just hours old is found without the mother. Abandoned puppies and a man found murdered all seem to have a connection. Raine who is recently divorced from the local Sheriff is called in to help solve the mystery. During this time she begins a relationship with a man who has a daughter who has a grudge with the world. Throughout the book training tips for dogs are woven into the plot.
I loved this story. It did start a bit slow but I love hearing about Raine's wonderful adorable and incredibly SMART dogs. I only wish I had a friend who could read my fur buddies minds.
The best part came when Miles brought his daughter Melanie to visit Raine. How that child blossomed and actually learned what so much from Raine and the dogs and her dad too.
Tears in my eyes. I am geting tired of hearing about Buck though. Hope he marries that other gal and moves away.
Another part was that involving the old lady and her "gift" to Raine, and the lovely stories about know lassies owner and trainer etc. How many of us grew up with Lassie and watched our children do the same. Thank You Donna Ball I am continueing this wonderful story line.
Christmas cozies have become an industry unto themselves and to do my part for the economy, I try to read one every December. Often they're a disappointment but "Silent Night," the fifth volume in the Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries, was a welcome surprise.
Stockton and her search and rescue dog Cisco live in a small North Carolina town. This is, of course, a murder mystery, but in addition to a murder, there's a child in a manger, romance, the Smokey Mountains in winter, history, possible spies, social conscience, surprisingly excellent action, and puppies.
Stockton has the best description of heartache after a divorce I've ever read and her sympathy for rural people in an area with decreasing economic options is heart-felt. This is not, however, a grim read. It is a delightful Christmas cozy with a very appealing heroine, an engrossing and meaningful plot, and puppies. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
